Accessible packaging, more autonomy for consumers

Packaging has multiple functions. On one hand, it must comply with the product’s protection, keeping it in optimal conditions during its distribution, storage and commercialization. On the other hand, the product it contains must be recognizable, attractive and accessible for its user.

What is the “inclusive packaging”?

Designing an accessible or inclusive packaging is a social commitment, aiming to allow users to get access to the products they need in a safe, comfortable and satisfactory way, regardless of their age, cultural level or physical and cognitive faculties.

The final goal is to create, from the very beginning, accessible containers for as many people as possible. The opening, usability, and closure are some of the aspects  that need to be worked when designing an inclusive packaging.

More involved with 8% of the population

Inclusive design and social consciousness should be combined to ease the access of the whole community to packaging: the elderly, people with vision or mobility problems or with any kind of disability.

Currently, in Spain, 8% of the population suffers from some kind of handicap, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). To them,  the form, size or texture of the container are key elements to identify in a better way the product they are buying

For people with visual disabilities, Braille labels are crucial to  facilitate the use of a product. Is is also  important to work on design aspects, such as good contrast between colors, size, and typography or the use of the same range of colors for products with similar characteristics.

As for people with mobility problems and the elderly, it is essential coming up with opening and distribution solutions that require the minimal effort for them, such as easy grip formats.   

A step further towards adherence to treatment

Data about the adherence to therapies is alarming. According to a 2017 research by the Adherence to Treatment Observatoire (OAT), over 50% of the patients do not follow the treatment correctly. This has an impact on sanitary expenses, on aid demand and treatment inefficiency.

Nonetheless, the lack of adherence to prescribed treatments is considered to be a public health issue by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The solution starts with the medical team education and the involvement of the patient. Packaging can help the monitoring process, using designs that connect with the patient, with intuitive formats to ease the taking of the doses (single dosage format, labels for each day of the week, interactive areas for the patient to fill) or adapting the size and shape to ease its portability.
